Ground Down is a horror narrative presented in Twine. You, a lone farmer, must deal with your declining dental health, predatory neighbors and big box companies trying to buy your farm, and idiot workers who don't follow safety procedures.

It is a slow march towards the inevitable.

This game was made for the Global Game Jam in 2023, following the theme of 'Roots'. The version here on includes some additional content and small changes from the original GGJ version, which can be found and played here:

The game is a text-only interactive novel with music. It contains several choices the player can make, and one optional choice where the player can input text. There is one ending.

Playtime varies based on both your reading speed and the choices you make, and may take anywhere from ten to thirty minutes, though I welcome people to let me know how long they spent going through the game.

Ground Down is free to play, but if you like, you can feel free to use the "Support This Game" button to make a monetary donation.

Full content warnings:

  • death
  • body horror imagery related to teeth
  • plant horror
  • loss of at least one finger
  • violence and gore (written)
  • animal death
  • implied sexism

This game is amazing! The writing is brilliant, and the choices of font and music are perfect. I also very much appreciate that you can name your hen! I love the small touches of humor just as much as I love the creepy imagery, and the slowly creeping sense of dread is fantastic. I'm a big fan of botanical horror to begin with, and one might say this story grew on me quickly.

hehehe thank you so much! it is so wonderful to get a comment like this, thank you. especially appreciate that you like the font choice because i spent way too much time figuring that one out lmao. i've also been so glad to see people naming the hen! very glad i figured out how to code that haha. anyway thank you again for playing and leaving me this wonderful comment :D
